Adaptive Smart Straw
A smart assistive drinking system that helps people with motor disabilities and swallowing disorders drink more safely and independently.

The problem
Where the barrier is.
Traditional cups, straws, and drinking aids often assume steady motor control and safe swallowing without assistance. For people with severe motor disabilities or dysphagia, drinking can become tiring, dependent on a caregiver, and risky when liquid flow is too fast or difficult to control.
What it does
How it helps.
A modular smart straw system that controls liquid flow, sip volume, and drinking speed while supporting multiple input methods: touch, voice, proximity sensors, and a mobile app. Emergency stop, audio and visual alerts, and remote caregiver assistance help make drinking safer and more personalized.
The impact
What it changes.
The project began as a personal solution for safer independent drinking, but its goal is broader: improve independence, safety, comfort, and quality of life for people with motor and swallowing challenges worldwide.
In depth
How it works.
Adaptive Smart Straw is an intelligent assistive drinking device designed to help individuals with physical motor disabilities and swallowing disorders consume liquids more safely, comfortably, and independently. It uses smart liquid flow control to manage both the amount and speed of liquid intake, and can be operated through touch buttons, voice commands, proximity sensors, or a mobile application. The device is designed for people living with conditions such as SMA, ALS, MS, Cerebral Palsy, stroke, spinal cord injuries, paralysis, and age-related swallowing difficulties. Unlike traditional drinking aids and standard straws, it focuses on accessibility, safety, and personalization through adjustable flow intensity, sip volume control, emergency stop functionality, audio and visual alerts, and remote caregiver support.
